HTC’s and Nokia’s flagship Windows Phones for the holiday season were just released last week. Samsung has one coming a bit later, but right now the Nokia Lumia 920 and Windows Phone 8X by HTC are the two top of the line Windows Phone 8 devices available… and they are very different in many ways. First off there is a significant size and weight difference. The Lumia 920 is heavier and thicker and wider and has a larger physical screen size. They both have dual core 1.5Ghz processors, but according to the benchmarks, the Lumia 920 is a little faster.

The screens are very different too. The Lumia 920 has a 768 x 1280 pixel IPS TFT 4.5″ screen, while the 8X has a lower resolution 720×1280 Super LCD2 style 4.3″ screen with a longer 16:9 aspect ratio. The Lumia 920 also has a much greater degree of touch sensitivity since it can work fine while wearing gloves where as the 8X is unresponsive to covered fingers. Both have 1Gb of RAM, but the Lumia 920 has 32Gb of storage while the 8X only has 16Gb and neither have expandable storage via MicroSD card support. The 8X has a dedicated audio amplifier with Beats audio for great sound quality while the Lumia 920 has Dolby sound processing.

When it comes to the camera, the Lumia 920 has a slightly higher resolution at 8.7 megapixels vs. 8 megapixels in the 8X. Plus, the Lumia 920 has the extremely innovative optical image stabilization where the camera lens is suspended within the body in order to reduce camera shake that causes blur with slower shutter speeds. This means it can absorb more light with more sharpness than other cameras. Both devices can record video at 1080p HD resolution, but the Lumia 920 again has the advantage due to its optical image stabilization which also improves video recording smoothness while in motion.

The Lumia 920 boasts built in wireless charging and a 2000 mAh battery to power all of the extra features as well as the LTE high speed network support. The 8X also has LTE but only the Verizon version will have built-in Qi standard wireless charging to keep its 1800 mAh battery juiced up.

In terms of software, I think the advantage again goes to the Nokia Lumia 920. When you look in the Nokia Collection store, you’ll find dozens more exclusive and extremely useful apps available to you versus what you’ll find in the HTC store. Many of Nokia’s value-added apps are free as well. You’ll get excellent offline GPS navigation software with maps around the world, free music downloads, offline movie trailers, public transportation directions, augmented reality location services and weather apps, numerous camera lenses, and special news/sports apps. Meanwhile on the HTC Windows Phone 8X, many of the value-added software they had for older Windows Phones seems to be currently unavailable. There’s no more HTC Footprints for GPS navigation and no more camera lenses for panoramic or burst shot effects.

Now when it comes to pricing, you’ll only be able to get the Lumia 920 on AT&T in the USA for now and it’s available for $99 with a 2 year contract. The Windows Phone 8X on AT&T is $199 with a 2 year contract.

  1. When my Lumia 920 was still working, it had good color and great sound. But the thing was kind of heavy for a smart phone.

It was rendered in operable when it fell on the floor in a car one day.

  2. NOKIA LUMIA IS THEBEST SMARTPHONE DESIGN

  3. Nokia 920 is defiantly going to be my upgrade when I get a new phone I wanted one to begin with but they were all sold out when I got my second lucid 2 which isn't a bad phone at all but I really like the Nokia 920

  4. Microsoft Thanks For Selling Me Such A Piece Of Shit…

    That Is All

    Walks Away Flipping You Off

  5. Only advantage the HTC has over Nokia is the Beats audio speaker. If Nokia had beats too it would be better in every way.

  6. Nokia Lumia 920 is very nice! The camera is the best i've ever seen for this price

  7. Can you download a app to get free music on these? I don't nether and I wondering

  8. Nokia 925 solved the weight problem and it has an even better camera! I have 8x and I would like to go for the nokia 925, it's far better!

  9. How in the world is an 8X better? It has a crappier camera, and nokia'so marketplace is a TON bigger than HTC's marketplace. The only difference is the phone weighs more. But you know what? I hate paper light phones. They always feel like they are going to just fall out of my hand compared to having a true solid phone in my hand. Idk, personal preference but I choose 920. Hate if you want, but I won't give a shit

  10. I am only intrested in the best of the two soundwise

  11. Nokia my choice for maps, drive, camera. I don't mind Nokia's extra weight. Build quality materials very strong. Had an N9 which froze and had to be replaced from new after a fortnight as you can't access the rear internals. Blacks are really black. Prefer 1020 with Camera grip.

  12. he didn't use the bsi sensor on the 8X correctly. it's true the 920 does take better low light photos, but not by that wide a margin. i have an 8X and it takes much better low light photos than the example he showed.

  13. I love my 920 for me its the best phone i've ever had ! 🙂

  14. well, i don't have an 8x, but i have a lumia 920. If you compare the difference between 920 and 1020, is that the 1020 have 1gb more ram, a better camera, a bit thinner except for the camera hub. Otherwise, the phone is about the same. 920 is a lot cheaper aswell. So unless you are a camera hoe then i recomend the 920 strongly, they both have the same camera app now and that makes the camera on 920 alot better. also, don't forget that then 1020 is twice as expensive as the 920.

  15. I'm going to get the 8x in September but so you think the new nokia lumia will be better ?? Before I buy It

  16. who the hell need instagram?!

  17. watch my video: how to remove scratches from a turntable hood ore smartphone display

  18. I got the Lumia 920, it doesnt have an app called instagram but there are apps supporting it (as i heard) and it has temple run but i personally think it works better on samsung, they updated it but i didnt test the update (sorry) and if u want to know about games available check windowsphone website and there u can see the apps and games. truthfully, I love the phone, but it still needs development, if u are using samsung or iphone then u might feel a bit disappointed becoz it works differently

  19. Yep it has Instagram (currently called 'Itsdagram'), it has Temple Run, and it will have Halo Spartan Assault!

  20. another fat retard makes a useless comparison of two phones

  21. Your Lumia has a close button for open files? How does that work? I need a screenshot to believe that..

  22. Can you please tell me how to share videos via Bluetooth

  23. 1)I have 920..
It has close button for open files
    2) it transfers videos via Bluetooth..
I think you should learn how to use the most innovative smart phone..:p

  24. do you even know the word "form"

  25. If windows phone 8 has instagram, temple run and other games I would probably get one

  26. nokia lumia 920 is the shit man, it beats the pants of the HTC

  27. I own lumia 920 and I would like to tell one thing the phone Hardware ROCKZZZ…… but the OS is the shittyest OS I have ever seen.
1)I got 5 new very fucking problems in my phone which is not getting repaired even after hard reset
    2)videos cannot transfer using Bluetooth
3)no close button for open apps
4)no file sending allowed in Skype
5)no music or videos can be downloaded using ie10 which is the basic requirement of a smartphone
    6)no radio
    7)Microsoft ditched wp8(no updates)

    +17 other prob

  28. Nokia Lumia 920 is HOT!!!

  29. i think Lumia 920's camera beat every phone even samsung galxy s4 !

  30. coz u r an htc supporter or you own the 8x…

  31. can you a video for the lumia 720 ??

  32. your videos are so usefull thank you !!

  33. I'm just sick of this bias report

  34. Y u guys finding u guys should know that a Nokia lumina 920 is better than any phone

  35. you didnt talk aboit the htc image chip nor did you seem rqually concerned about stating all differences equally. seems a little biased to me
